JORDAN -- Anterior midline point stop device (AMPS) in the treatment of myogenous TMDs: Comparison with the stabilization splint and control group

The above study provides photographs of a typical AMPS device provided to 38 consecutive patients complaining of myogenous TMD pain:

Although the article does state, "The AMPS devices prevented posterior and canine occluding in all excursive and protrusive movements. The point or the discluding elements were ramped antroposteriorly to provide a smooth path in protrusion while horizontally narrow enough to prevent the canines from touching it", it is unlikely that 38 consecutive patients were unable to achieve lower canine contact on an upper Discluding Element, or were unable to protrude beyond the extention of the DE.

Simply requesting the patient to "move their jaw sideways" is typically not sufficient of a request, but rather, patient's must be encouraged to "move your jaw as far sideways as you possibly can".
The patient whose AMPS device prevents canine contact in excursive movement may suddenly be able to clench on the DE with a lower canine effortlessly.
